Kandy is beautifully set in within the foothills of the Hill Country, a perfect link on a tour of Sri Lanka between the Cultural Triangle to the north and the Hill Country to the south. It was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings who were defeated by the British in 1815, and is now Sri Lanka’s second city. The ornate Temple of the Tooth houses what is said to be the Buddhas Tooth, and is set around the picturesque Kandy Lake. In August, Kandy plays host to the Esala Perahera where the Buddhas Tooth is taken on a ceremonial elephant through the town, it is quite a show, and Sri Lanka’s most famous festival. As well as the Temple of the Tooth, you can explore the surrounding villages that still retain age-old arts and craft production, the Botanical Garden and the Commonwealth War Cemetery.
