Thimphu

Thimphu is Bhutan’s capital city, but only has a population of about 100,000 meaning that it is more like a town and still retains the unique Bhutanese architecture rather than allowing modern western styles to take over. It is located just a short drive away from Paro where you find Bhutan’s International Airport and is ideal as a first-stop on a Bhutan tour, leaving Paro for the grand finale. Thimphu is generally worth a day or two to see the city, and is especially good if you like to see local arts and crafts at work such as in the Zorig Chusum (National Istitute of Thirteen Arts) and Paper Museum. There is a particularly good weekend market in Thimphu which is well worth visiting. We especially rate the interesting Folk Museum, a great introduction before walking through the villages later on during your tour of Bhutan. Do pop down to the main archery crowd, hopefully catching a game in progress. There are a few longer walks you can do such as to Doderak, Cheri Monastery, Tango Monastery and Phadjodhing.
